Affiliate marketing is probably the most popular term that newbies hear of when they first start learning about online marketing. An extremely lucrative business for many experts, affiliate marketing is misunderstood by many more. The most important thing as a newcomer to digital marketing might just be to learn how affiliate marketing works. Perhaps after you understand it, you can set up a plan to make it work for you and your business.
What is Affiliate Marketing and Why Is It So Popular
Before we get into the “what” let’s answer the question “why”… Why is this business model so well-known among internet marketers? The first answer is because it is a FREE strategy to set up. Unfortunately, when newbies hear the word “FREE”, they think that they will not have to spend any money as an affiliate marketer and that just isn’t true.
Moving on to the “what”… Affiliate marketing, plain and simple, is the process of getting permission from an online marketer, who has created a product, to promote and sell their product for them. If you are successful in making sales for the product vendor, then you will receive a commission of every sale you are responsible for.
Product vendors benefit tremendously by having affiliate marketers selling their products for them. Therefore, an affiliate should never be charged a fee to promote products and that is why affiliate marketing is FREE.
Why Affiliate Marketing Is Not Completely FREE
Becoming an affiliate for a product usually requires being accepted into an Affiliate program which is not usually that difficult, unless you’re trying to get in on product launches. Once accepted, the affiliates are responsible for setting up advertising campaigns and driving traffic to the offers to make sales. This is where the money is spent.
As an affiliate marketer, you should have some kind of core strategy in place to promote your affiliate offers to the public. It is important to learn and focus on using this core strategy as the primary means for product promotion. Trying to do everything at the same time usually results in the affiliate not making many if any sales at all… so you need to plan for success.
Here are a few strategies affiliates use to promote products:
- Video Marketing
- Social Media Marketing
- Paid Advertising
- Email Marketing
All of these strategies are used by affiliate marketers for specific marketing campaigns and all of them cost money or time… but usually both.
Blogging – Let’s take for instance the idea of blogging as a medium for affiliate marketing. The first thing a blogger has to do before the blogging starts is to set up a website, get hosting for the site and pay for a domain name, which costs money. Then, the also have to learn how to blog correctly to make affiliate sales, which also costs money.
Video Marketing – Video marketing seems that it shouldn’t cost anything… All you have to do is upload videos to YouTube, right? Well, you will most likely need a good camera and editing software to get started for sure. And to let you in on a little secret… Many video marketers supplement their video views by paying for their vids to be seen, at least to get more viewers initially ($$$).
Social Media Marketing – Another organic (free) marketing strategy for affiliates to use. Although getting social shouldn’t cost anything, you will have to at least pay for a social media management platform to assist you in sending out all your social posts in an organized way to build a following… and nine times out of ten you will also have a website to send your prospective buyers back to.
When newbies learn that all these different techniques go into affiliate marketing, it causes a lot of confusion. But remember… the core concept of affiliate marketing never changes. As an affiliate your responsibility is to promote other peoples products. Realizing that promoting can be done in many different ways and that it usually costs money is where the misunderstandings occur.
Is Affiliate Marketing Worth The Effort
Affiliate marketing is a business model that many online marketers are using at this moment to make passive profits online. The fact that there are people earning six and seven figures per year as affiliates means it is worth the effort. Online marketing takes time, money, patience and hard work to become successful.
As an affiliate you have the opportunity to become a digital marketer without ever creating your own product. This is the advantage of the affiliate marketing business strategy. It can take months for product vendors to get one product ready for the market, but as an affiliate you never have to worry about waiting. You can get started with marketing and advertising almost immediately. This is the beauty of being an affiliate.
